BeaverSlide's Review of Helly Hansen Sogn Shell Jacket - Men's
This is a great shell jacket made by Helly Hansen. There is no insulation and as such it is great for placing over a comfortable base and jacket; conditions depending.
What I like. I love the lime green color. It stands out and goes well with other bright hues. At first thought I felt the jacket was designed strange..where a large seam protrudes slightly above where a too-short t-shirt would land on someone. It looked strange wearing it. When I rode I could tell this was in-fact perfect for the way one's body would lean and twist. It was absolutely comfortable and I had great range-of-movement while feeling completely unaware of the frigid conditions I was in. I fell three times and did not have any issues with powder-creep at the cuffs or bottom. Plus there is this "recco" avalanche locator stitched in to the arm, something my local resort uses; so that's pretty cool. It's a great jacket all around and looks friggin sweet.
What I don't like. Pockets. First off the "life pocket" can barely fit an iphone 5. It will not fit my actual phone witch has a larger screen. That said this pocket is a too small to be useful for much anything else either. The pockets on the sides also serve as vents. These are also very small and I find they fit my gloves and that is about all. I wish these were in a more normal placement as well. They are much higher than one would expect and this become a chore while finding things on the gondola. Zippers. Man these sippers are sweet. You can see they are waterproof but they are a pain to zip and unzip. I found I had to take of my gloves to actually zip AND unzip this. I wish it wasn't so.
Jacket runs small. I am 5'10 - 168 lbs - 37 1/2 inch chest - fairly slim. Small was too tight for me and I was on the high end of the size chart. No way I could have layered underneath it. Had to go with medium. Campsaver was super nice and easy to get ahold of. If I am ever on my way to Logan I will stop on the way and see if they have a storefront. Nice folks, good discounts.
