Hillsound trail crampons are the best! carbon steel points! - Hillsound Trail Crampon

I have used Hillsound FreeSteps6 crampons for two years all winter in an urban environment. I walk a 100 lb dog everyday all winter across fields and uneven terrain. Sometimes crossing concrete or blacktop roads to get to these fields. I wear crampons to go to and from my car in the winter because of a sloping North facing drive. This year I realized that I had worn down the Freesteps crampons so much that they had nothing but flat bars instead of points.
I knew that I had to find a better crampon. I did have a spare new set of Freesteps6 to use until I made a purchase.
I bought the Stabilicers and tried them a few times. Replacement spikes were a reason for the purchase. The size is Stabilicers Macro Gry/grn Lg MACRO-750-03
12J-FA3-NTN18559-MACRO-750-03
I bought this size because I wear a size 12 trail shoe (Vasque) or a 12 boot (Lowa). I have for two years been wearing the Hillsound Freesteps XL size. These have been a great fit over both shoes and boots.
I find that the Stabilicers feel like a elevated platform compared to the Freesteps6. I think that the rear plate does not come back far enough under my heel and as I walk with a long stride I am not landing with all of my weight over the rear spikes. It is really noticeable on a solid frozen surface or crossing a road. I looked at the size chart again to see if the next size would be better but I think that it will make the fit loose. I do not feel as stable with the Stabilicers as I do with the Freesteps6 or my recent purchase of the Hillsound Trail Crampons.
The Trail Crampons have carbon steel which is harder then stainless heat treated steel. I think in my case they will maintain their sharp points longer.
They have longer points then the Freesteps6 crampons and thus a slightly elevated feel. They have a more aggressive feel on any terrain and ice is really no different then frozen ground. The points are approximately 9/16" in length. With these I walk or jog across any natural terrain at a fast pace with complete confidence. On bare roadway I will moderate my speed but ice covered road is no problem what so ever. I walk slower on pavement to minimize the wear to my crampons.
I bought the XL size in both Hillsound crampons and they are a great fit on both shoes and boots.
Bottom line: Hillsound Trail Crampons are my first choice over the Stabilicers or the Hillsound Freesteps6 crampons. Hillsound Freesteps6 are my 2nd choice. I now own two sets of the Hillsound Trail Crampons.
I learned the hard way a few years ago that winter and falling can lead to a serious injury and surgery. I don't want to do that again.
