bill's Review of Hyperlite Mountain Gear Flat Large Tarp

Nice tarp! There are several Dyneema tarp makers online, the question becomes which brand? Since no one seems to have owned all of them, and the prices are similar, it comes down to what size do you want. My two cents - get the longest ridge line you can find as the ends are where the wind driven rain is going to get on your sleeping bag. You can always tie the sides down close to the ground so width is slightly less important. Line is cheap, this tarp comes with some line but you will need more line to get 8 foot sections on ridge and 6 feet sides. As far as I can tell the line is 2.8 mm UHMWPE core guy lines, do a google search you will find it. the tarp comes with line locks attached so thread the line through the line locks then tie a bowline knot on the end that goes on the stakes for the sides. To attach to the poles I used a product called Zpacksâ„¢ Trekking Pole Cup. There are two rings on the interior of the ridge line of the tarp which are perfect for attaching a bug tent (i use a tiny carabiner) or to your bivy. Suggest whatever bug tent you buy get one with a bathtub floor. Dyneema burns easy, do not get close to a campfire with it. wrap some duct tape on your trekking poles for repairs.
Pros:
  • light!
  • interior rings
Cons:
  • Expensive
  • have to buy more cordage
  • burns easy
Best Used for:
  • Backpacking
