I purchased these not for trail running, but for trail hiking with a light/ultralight sensibility in mind. Weight per pair is relatively light. There is an aggressive, soft rubber tread compound that's effective on multiple surfaces. There is a lightweight nylon flexible midsole that is effective in keeping pressure from sharp rocks off your foot. The toebox is protected by a pretty thin rubber rand. On the downside, the Inov8 lacing system isn't very good. Everything feels as though it lies on the top of the foot. Cinching down the laces doesn't transfer to a secure feeling that your foot is wrapped snugly into the shoe. Rather, if feels as though a set of laces sitting on top of your foot has been tightened without anything more than some pressure being applied to the top of your foot. This, paired with the soft and lightweight construction of the toe box leaves me with the feeling of my foot sloshing around in the front of the shoe. At the same time, these are fairly narrow. I wear a 9.5 or 42eu in everything. These ran small. A size 10 which gave me a pinky-width of toe room more did line up the break of my foot better in the shoe. However, for trail hiking shoes I think the little amount of toe box structure and protection would quickly drive me nuts. It wouldn't take but a couple errant toe kicks to stub a big toe, or rip the mesh fabric.
