Sized small - La Sportiva Ultra Raptor GTX Trail Running Shoe - Women's

I really wanted to like these shoes, but they are extremely uncomfortable for me. I normally wear a 38. After reading reviews, I sized up and ordered a 38.5. When the shoes arrived, they felt tight. There was plenty of room to wiggle my toes, but the shoes pressed down on the tops of my feet. I considered sending them back; however, size 39 wasn't available. So I decided to see if they felt better after breaking in. I wore them several days before leaving for a trip, and they were tolerable. However, during my trip, I was on a trail when a sharp pain went through my left foot. I sat on a log and loosened the laces, which are very short already. That helped a little bit, and I managed to make it back to my car. However, I'm reluctant to keep wearing these shoes. They're stylish and definitely waterproof, but I think it would be best if I gave them to someone with tiny feet.
