Nick G's Review of Mammut Masao Jacket - Mens

I bought this fairly basic shell jacket to use primarily for resort skiing and I’m very impressed with Mammut’s construction and attention to detail (as usual). These guys really know how to make great outdoor apparel for tall, lanky guys like me. The jacket is a fairly burly medium weight 3L shell that’s softer and less stiff than standard Gore-Tex, with just a bit of stretch to it. I haven’t had a chance to test its waterproofing yet, but I can tell it’s impressively breathable. My XL weighs 20 oz.
The fit is just about right for my 6’ 5”, 220 lb. frame; it’s the right length in the body and sleeves with enough room for layering underneath. I can easily fit a warm puffy underneath, but it doesn’t look baggy through the body with thinner layers. The detailing is simply perfect, and it’s one smooth-looking jacket in Titanium with blue zippers. All pockets are well-placed. It’s got two generous handwarmer pockets, one smaller upper chest pocket, and two internal mesh pockets. The Velcro-adjustable cuffs are really easy to adjust with gloves or mittens on.
Overall, you really get a lot of jacket for $300 here (I paid less than half that, though). This is a great jacket for wet snow conditions you find in the Sierras or Cascades. Highly recommended for cold weather alpine adventures, backcountry skiing, or resort skiing.
Things I would change: make the upper chest pocket bigger and add a removable powder skirt. And the main zipper can be a bit balky.
Pros:
  • Great Fit
  • Burly, yet lightweight
  • Very breathable
  • Good looking
Cons:
  • Small chest pocket
  • Balky main zipper
Best Used for:
  • Alpine activities
