Alex B.'s Review of Mammut Nordwand Pro Hard Shell Hooded Jacket - Men's

It's worth mentioning that I have not had the coat for long, nor am I using it for its intended design. My main usage is for winter commuting, where I cycle along a lake for large stretches of time and combined with the wind chill, the weather can get pretty vicious (though by no means am I climbing Everest). For context, cold for my location is -15 to -30 C plus windchill which can get really ugly on the water.

I recently rode with nothing but a mid-layer in -8 degrees C + strong winds and was actually lightly sweating without the armpit vents. The hood perfectly comes up over my helmet, and the collar of the coat does an amazing job of blocking the majority of my face, such that aside from the eyes, you need very little additional protection.

In terms of fit, I've been a bit surprised given a lot of the reviews I read about this coat. I purchased a large and it is cut pretty much perfectly for my 5'11 ~185 pound frame. I'm by no means fat, but I am more of a weight lifter than I am a cyclist, and as I said, this fit perfectly with plenty of space in the chest and armpits (which is the main issue I read in other reviews that concerned me).

The arms ARE long-- but it's designed for climbing and the extra length is perfect for cycling too, so I'm ok with that. All in all, it is what it is, a very high quality hard shell. If you're not using it in crappy conditions and you're not moving around, you're spending a lot of money on something that is highly specialized. If you're outside in nasty conditions and you're moving around, it's absolutely perfect so far.
