My purchase of the Mammut Segnas Jacket was my entry into a new era of waterproof rain garments. Up to this point, every other waterproof garment I owned would have me sweating with the most minimal physical activity. I was born in the late 50's and have used most everything from canvas to rubber and some of the first plastic sheets ever made. They were all state of the art at one time, and something for a cowboy to be proud of. What it comes down to now though is weight. Oiled canvas Is waterproof, but it ain't lite.

The 1st articles written on this jacket listed it for over $500.00. It dropped to $400+ on several web-sites for a few months then stabilized at around $375.00 most every where that sells it. When it was new the only complaint anyone had was the price. After it dropped a bit people started to recognize the same faults that I have. No Pit-Zips, that's a mistake. They will tell you that it's to save weight and that the pockets work as venting. Both may be true, but missing Pit-Zips is still a mistake. I want to be able to vent every layer with Pit-Zips except my base layer.

If you think of this as a new-age, lite weight, rain slicker then your not far off. It offers little warmth itself, even with the hood up, but it sheds water like a ducks back. The hood was designed to fit well, move with you, and be comfortable both with and without a helmet, and it does just exactly that. Just takes a little dialing in for your specifics.
