I've spent some time in many different tents over the years but this is the first tent I own. I've pitched it few times just to get familiar with it and make a choice will should I keep it or return, and go for Tarptent StratoSpire2. After playing around with it I've decided to keep it as TT is going to cost me around 100$ more to import to Europe and with Marmot Amp 3p I get warranty and everything. Also I'm a bit concerned about tarptents footprint and multiple stake points when using in alpine terrain.
Setup :
It took me around 3-4 min to pitch Marmot Amp 3p the first time with no instructions or anything. It is super simple and very intuitive. I'm sure that after few times it will take me no longer than a minute or two.
You will need at least 6 stakes to keep it up as it is not free standing design.
I also tried to set Marmot Amp 3p up in storm/rain mode with the fly attached from the start, as it is impossible to set fly first tent later. It is possible but very unpleasant task. Took much more time and fiddling than normal setup. But it is possible, what is important for meas in going to use it in Alps/Caucasus/Pamirs/Tatras all famous for bad weather.
There is a very short pole in the leg section lifting that part around 40cm so the slope is not that drastic and there is room in back part.
Llikes:
- Super light for 3p tent, even if its semi-free standing design
- Very roomy with a lot of headroom. I'm 178cm/5.8" and have around 10cm/3' at least when sitting.
- Bathtub floor is very nicely made and looks very robust and durable.
- I was worried about the connection between the rainfly and the rest with the tent from the back where it doesn't cover at full length. It is very nicely done and looks promising.
- Many loops for guy-out points for windy weather.
- Its very interesting from design point.
Dislikes
- I think its a huge mistake that those two vertical poles can't be replaced by walking poles. It would be super easy to implement and would shed few ounces.
- For the tent at this price I would expect at least mediocre stakes. Those provided by Marmot are terrible and they should be ashamed of themselves.
- I don't like the plastic connectors between poles. I have bad feeling about those.
This is just first impressions after around an hour with the tent. I'm planning a trip to the Alps this week so will update after testing in the field. Posting pictures as I couldn't find any when I was looking around.
