Andrea's Review of Marmot Amp 3 Tent - 3 Person, 3 Season

I regret purchasing this tent but am unable to return it as my son works in the industry and got a pro-deal. The fly drains onto the tent above where your lower legs are, requiring fastidious and time consuming guy-wiring if rain is anticipated PLUS your sleeping bag encased size 14 feet (once you have your mat down and your puffy toe box accounted for) will touch the top of the tent causing condensation to drip onto your sleeping bag. We go back country in the Canadian Rockies where even in mid-summer, temperatures can be very cold and weather changes quickly and unexpectedly. I’d rather carry an extra pound for the reliability of a tent with a fly that covers the entire tent and the peace of mind that touching the tent with large size feet is avoidable.
The story? The first night we went out with it we were delighted at its light weight and small size. It’s an ingenious setup once you’ve figured it out and is well-constructed with good materials. So far so good. We have such a nice time we forget to batten down the hatches as it were, and find, after it pisses rain all night long, that we have a large quantity of water streaming down from the ‘V’ of the fly where our feet are. The toe boxes of our sleeping bags are soaked. Fortunately we had only planned on one night.
The second time we spent a solid hour carefully guy-wiring so that the water wouldn’t pool in that ‘V’ at the bottom of the fly and again we were obliged and provided copious amounts of rain. This time it’s two small women sleeping in it. Although our bags’ toe boxes are near to touching, there’s no contact and all’s well.
The third time I’m with my 6’4” 17 year old with the size 14 feet. Night one is cool and dry. We experience normal amounts of condensation in the tent. The second night it’s cold and it rains a bit. Both bags are damp from the top where the condensation dripped on our shins/feet.
Although this tent may be alright for two small-footed, light breathing back country campers travelling in warm, dry conditions I’ve got no confidence in it. While I applaud Marmot for being innovative, I encourage them to pull the plug on the Amp 3. Back country campers need products they can count on regardless of the size of their feet and how heavily they respire.
Oh, and the included pegs are garbage. You’ll need to buy at least 12 good quality pegs for staking and guy wiring.
