This jacket is pretty magical and works exactly as I hoped it would. First thing you notice out of the box is how light and soft the alpha/pertex quantum combo is. You think something this thin and light won't be warm, but as soon as you put it on you feel the warmth right away. But the big point for me was breathability during active pursuits. I had an opportunity to test this on a couple of recent hikes in misty, drizzly 60 degree weather. I was wearing a Merino 120 as base, shorts, waterproof hikers, and ball cap. Pushing hard on some steep hills I could feel a film of sweat on my base and under my cap, but I never had to unzip the Alpha 60 and it was completely dry inside at all times. The jacket breathes and wicks so well that it simply won't allow vapor to build up for long. It's not a rain shell by any means, but the DWR treated Pertex easily shed the light drizzle. I have only worn as an outer layer so far, but in cooler weather I can see this being a great mid layer. This is a highly versatile piece.
I'm 5'9" 180, athletic build with broad shoulders. The large fits me well, not form fit, but fairly trim fit without any restriction in arms/shoulders. The zips all work smoothly, cuffs and hood are elastic fit. Comparing it to other insulated jackets I have (Atom LT and SL), it is more breathable than both and between the two in terms of warmth. I have not yet tested the Marmot in cold weather, but that's my impression of warmth based on wearing all three at room temp....
