TJ's Review of Mountain Hardwear Kor Strata Hooded Jacket - Men's

I was in the market for a new synthetic insulated mid/outer, ran across an INSANE sale here on the Kor Strata Hoody, pulled the trigger and hit the bullseye. This is an excellent jacket that may not deliver the "best in class" features of some of the others out there but it comes in at a price point that's far less expensive even at full retail.

I'd read that the jacket has a slim fit which makes sense given that its ability to act like a midlayer. But I had a specific need for this. I live in the mountains where night time temps are very rarely over 50 degrees in the summer so I was looking for something that would be suitable for trail to town. The Kor Strata doesn't have the techy look like so many others, which made it a perfect candidate, so I sized up to an XL given that I'm a solid Large in everything. Turned out to be way too big. Campsaver was SUPER solid with their return policy, got me the L quickly, and it was winner. Still not slim fitting though which was fine for me. Overall I'd say it's true to size.

The jacket is very lightweight, exceptionally comfortable, has a soft but a durable (so far) face, doesn't bind anywhere, has above average wind protection and also above average breathabiity. They struck a great balance. It does have below average rain protection but it's not really made for that. I've yet to apply DWR but will need to before the next season. It does handle snow well but wets out quickly in the rain although I've still remained pretty dry.

The hood is large but not adjustable which might be an issue for some. There are no internal pockets but does come with two large external pockets with solid zippers which, like the main zipper, moves very easily. I also like the fact that there's only two, small, inconspicuous (cool looking) logos. I don't like being a billboard. My only gripe is the drawstring hem which can loosen and also dangle. It's not a unique issue with MH. Why companies don't work some type of attachment feature in to their jackets is something I don't understand.

I've worn it both as a mid and outer layer and have never felt clammy on hikes. Being inactive with a merino baselayer I'd say it's sweet spot is probably 30 - 50.

So while it may not be exceptional in any one category (except lightweight comfort), or offer all the bells and whistles of stupid expensive insulated jackets, I'm totally stoked with this purchase. It does everything I need it to do and looks great in the process.
Pros:
  • Comfortable, breathable, durable, wind resistant, stylish
Cons:
  • water resistance, drawsting hem, lack of features some may want
Best Used for:
  • Rock solid for Trail to Town
