Great filter at a decent price

by Tyler, Gear Expert from UT, United States Written on September 10, 2011
The MSR Miniworks is a great filter for the price. It is very reliable and easy to maintain. I usually find chemical treatment easier but when that is not a option the Miniworks is the way to go. The Hyperflow will pump more quickly but you definitely sacrifice durability and ease of cleaning. The ceramic filter can be used several times before it needs to be replaced.
Most Helpful Positive Review I'd buy it again...
I have used First Need products in the past & was quite satisfied, but I have been equally satisfied with this product. It does have the added bonus of the threaded connection to water bags that my old First Need units did not.
Most Helpful Negative Review Works great, but tough to pump
The filter worked great at producing clear drinkable water out of a muddy river full of sediment/run-off. Just a little hard to pump. Easy to clean when I got home.

Only Good for about 5 Gallons!

by Blueskyz4me, from FL, United States Written on April 3, 2014
The Filter did not come with a hose for filling containers. It worked fine for about 5 gallons of water(crystal clear Colorado mountain stream water) I cleaned the ceramic filter with the supplied scraper which made it impossible to filter after that. After several attempts to get it working, I gave up and drank the water unfiltered directly from the stream. It is a poor design that needs work.

Great Water Purifier

by JoeG, Written on December 12, 2013
Used recently with my Boy Scout troop. Lightweight and easy to use. I like that you can clean it in the field. Unlike filters with disposable elements, you don't need to carry spares for when the boys dip the pickup tube in the muck and clog the filter. You can simply scrub it clean, boil it, and you are ready to go again.

I have a Steripen as well (which I use for international business trav

Would not got without MSR miniworks

by Tom, Written on September 10, 2013
I have used MSR Miniworks for over 10 years on 5 to 10 day backpacking trips in the High Sierras of Northern California and the Cascades of Washington. I find it easy to pack in and out and very simple to clean. It pumps a quart of water in just a few minute. You may have to clean it after you have pumped several quarts of H2O but it only takes a couple minutes to clean and put it back together an

Great filter

A bit on the heavier side, but well worth the weight. It screws directly onto the MSR Dromedary which is great.

good filter but false advertising

by K9 crazy, Written on September 10, 2011
I use this pump for backpacking, it works fine its easy to clean and not too heavy or bulky, but it is advertised as being able to pump a liter/min or a liter every 70 or 80 pumps. even with a clean filter and tap water that is impossible its more like a liter every 3 or 4 minutes and about 150 pumps/liter. I backpacked for a week in the uintas after purchasing and it did the job great just slow

Great Product if you know how to use it!

by Art, from CA, United States Written on September 10, 2011
The ceramic filtration system is an excellent way of purifying your water. Many have stated that pumping gets a little difficult, but that is typically resolved if the ceramic filter is cleaned. The filter can go quite a while without maintenance if the water source is more or less pure. However, you may run into trouble if you're filtering from very opaque water, in which case, the filter becom
