Most Helpful Positive Review Classic stove
Classic multi fule sotve from MSR, it is almost the same as whishperlite fule stove, but with the function as a canister stove. In the canister stove model, it work not as good as canister stove, but just fine. Great stove
Most Helpful Negative Review MSR Whisperlite Universal stove
I have used the MSR Whisperlite stove for years. When the International model came out I switched over to it. I just purchased the Universal model, because I find that I am using a canister stove more and more now. I haven't used it yet, but I'm sure it will work well, as all of my MSR stoves have. ...

A no fuss resilient tool

by Dan, Verified Owner from NJ, United States Written on February 7, 2024
This is an excellent durable little stove. I use the included lindal valve with a Primus ergo-pump. Primarily running klean heat kerosene with the appropriate kerosene jet (and added carbon felt to the priming cup), I discovered switching to isobutane canisters did not require a change of the jet. I could change it to get more BTUs, but it'll still boil a liter of water in reasonable time without any effort. Using it with the lindal valve allows me to easily move back and forth between cannisters and kerosene. Removing the generator coil first allows me to pack everything away in a 1.4 liter pot with plenty of room to spare for a lighter, spare O- rings, a windscreen, fuel pump, and a 2 oz bottle of denatured alcohol for priming.
Pros:
  • durable
  • reliable
  • Multifuel
Cons:
  • Heavy
Best Used for:
  • Car Camping
  • Winter backpacking

Compact size and great flexibility!

Good refresh of the classic. Delivers the effect on all fuels. Works well and easy to clean.Pot support arms are wide, which may be an issue for smaller diameter cups but offers stability. Fuel flexibility makes it a winner.
Pros:
  • QUALITY
  • cost
  • Flexibility
  • multi-fuel
Cons:
  • plastic pump hardware
  • some small parts
Best Used for:
  • single person
  • Hiking & Backpacking

Too many small parts and too much trouble to change them camping or from my motorcycle

by Dennis, from CA, United States Written on April 4, 2020
I have a Whisperlite that runs off all the liquid fuels and I love it. I thought it would be nice to have the newer model that can also use the propane. I was wrong. I'm 68 years old, need glasses for small things. Too much trouble when taking a break from my motorcycle for a quick hot meal (mountainhouse dehydrated usually) or coffee or tea to worry about changing a small valve and not loosing it or stripping it etc. You don't have to do any of that for the liquid fuels on the stove I have. I guess I will just stick with the old one and returned the new one
Pros:
  • variety of fuels and quality of the whisperlite line of protucts
Cons:
  • too many valve changes and too much trouble to use backpacking or from my motorcycle
Best Used for:
  • one type of fuel and valve combo and not changing

Fantastic Stove

Having the flexibility to use different fuel types is a tremendous advantage. Though a bit heavy when weight is a concern, the versatility far outweighs the extra few ounces. I'm looking forward to doing some serious outdoor gourmet meals with this stove.

Awesome out of the box!

by Mark T, Verified Owner from AL, United States Written on March 20, 2018
This is apparently what MSR built its reputation on. I have only run it on a canister so far, right side up not off the liquid which makes it a Universal. As I have seen on so many reviews, pulled full field cleaning on it. Between the instructions and YouTube really simple, though I will carry the book with me. Some reviews report d over torqued fittings and screws, they have apparently crossed that assembly issue. Cranked right up at 60 degree, pretty steady breeze, sputtered and in consistent flame, then leveled right out. Brought 1.5 Lars to a boil in a little over 7 minutes timed. I have tried white gas yet, which should burn a little hotter, also used a low flame. It is not any completion for my Reactor, but it does Whisper. Go ahead, you know you want to get yours!
Pros:
  • Light weight
  • Versitile
  • Solid construction
Cons:
  • None I could find
Best Used for:
  • emergencies
  • Through hikes
  • Deployment

amazing hybrid stove!

by jj, Written on April 3, 2014
I bought this stove for two reasons primarily.1. I wanted something that had more stability and surface area to accomadate a pan or bigger pot. I have a snow peak that fits into any backpacking pot. However I found that when I travel or go backcountry fishing I want something that can accomatade bigger pots and pans for fish or more food. Trying to balance that on a compact burner is hard.

In A Word: Versatile

by Mountain Man, Written on December 12, 2013
I chose this stove because it offered the ability to switch fuels to use whatever was available. This versatility means I can use the stove in a wide range of situations; from brewing a cup of tea after a long summit hike to burning gasoline as an emergency stove/heat source.
