EricM16's Review of Mystery Ranch Terraframe 3-Zip 50 Backpack

This is my first MR pack.

I did a TON of online research and talked with at least 8-12 AT hikers about their packs (Osprey, Z-pack, Gregory, etc).

Ultimately - I like to bring equipment and gear with me: hatchet, folding saw, extra paracord/rope, fly rod w/tube + reel + small fly box, hammock+tarp+underquilt, sleeping bag (depending on temps), pack chair (Helinox swivel), work gloves, extra tarp for "camp tarp", walkie-talkies (sometimes), water filter, stove/fuel, food, snacks, mug, clothing, warm layer, dop kit, etc.

I can fit everything in/on this pack WITHOUT needing the overload/expansion feature. It's nice knowing the overload feature is there and available though.

The external straps and molle straps allow you to strap practically anything to the exterior and the side pockets are large enough to fit a water bottle + fly rod tube in one single side pocket.

The ONLY slight drawback is the lack of any internal compartments at all. I wouldn't want many - but two interior mesh lined pockets on either side of the interior could be useful just keeping things somewhat organized. I use multiple dry bags or compression sacks to accomplish this, but the inside still ends up getting pretty jumbled up once you've reached camp and get started setting up. Having said that, getting into the main compartment is WAY easier with the Y-zipper design and I've watched my friends struggle reaching deep inside their bags "feeling around" for items.

The top zippered compartments are larger than you think - you can fit a lot in there.

The slightly smaller frame size (compared to larger 60+L packs) is easier to handle and maneuver while on the move. It rides well (still fine tuning the yoke positioning).

Overall, I'm really glad I spent the extra $ on this pack - and - Campsaver was one of the only online retailers that had available stock. Plus fast shipping!

Cons:
  • minimal interior organization
