ASTM FF3340 Test of R=2.6 Does Not Support NEMO's Claim 15°-25°F Pad

by dydxdx, Verified Owner from CO, United States Written on January 23, 2020
This is not a winter pad, sleeps cold. In spite of the "Insulated" hype, the ASTM FF3340 test put this pad in the warm, summer category.

I own two of the Insulated versions of this pad, and it is certainly not a 15° to 25°F pad. An R-value of 2.6 is a summer pad, reg & wide....misleading with the "Insulated" suggesting winter. It sleeps cold in near freezing temps.

Even REI mentions "Thicker pads generally offer higher R-values and the average summer camping pad should be around 3 or higher. Campers who sleep cold, often women, may want to choose a pad with an R-value of at least 4."

MEC mentions "Sleeping pads with an R-value of less than 3 are best for really warm weather."

Thermarest graphic shows R2.6 as summer pad.

The Insulated Astro is not a 15°-25°F Pad!
Pros:
  • Cushy
Cons:
  • Cold
Best Used for:
  • beach

sleeping pad

by Arnold B., Written on September 25, 2016
Just spent 12 days in the Bob Marshall wilderness on a diy elk hunt. I took my new Astro Insulated Lite sleeping pad. Getting a comfortable nights sleep has always been a problem for me when sleeping out. The new pad was the best thing yet by far. And it is easy to stay on the pad all night. No slipping off the side. I did get a hole in the pad, but it was east to fix with the included patch kit. Be very careful of what you lay this thing on ,because it will puncture. Very expensive, but worth every dime.

Sleeping Pad

by Barbara M., Written on January 27, 2016
I'm very happy with this purchase. I brought this winter backpacking and appreciated how comfortable, lightweight, and easy it was to use. I stacked it on a z-lite sol for warmth. I was deciding between the thermarest neoair xtherm, and am happy to have found a quieter, less expensive alternative.

Love this pad.

Bought two of these Nemo Astro Lite Insulated Pads for an upcoming 4 day backpacking trip along the John Muir Trail up Mt. Whitney. I’m expecting pleasant weather although a couple nights will likely dip below 30-degrees. I have not yet used my pad in the cold but I am very happy with the product’s weight, tight-packability, and comfort so far. I was initially set to purchase the standard Therm-a-Rest XLite however this excellent review http://indefinitelywild.gizmodo.com/the-best-outdoor-sleeping-pads-for-every-camper-1659697249 sealed the Nemo for me. Can’t wait to get this pad outside!

Excellent

I own numerous pads including Thermarest's excellent Neoair xlite which in my opinion can't be beat for cold weather. But this pad gives you more room for the weight in the over 40 degree conditions most encounter. If that's you, buy it. You'll sleep well for sure

Better Sleep than my Therma-A-Rest

by Tai E., from BC, Canada Written on July 6, 2015
Tried my new sleeping pad this past weekend on uneven ground and it was great. Sleeping on my side was very comfortable. It’s also quiet when moving around on it. It takes a little longer to inflate than my previous sleeping pad. The material appears to be a lot lighter in weight. I hope it is durable over the long term.

Thought it would be better ...

by Steve T., from OR, United States Written on May 23, 2015
I read a review on a top camping site that said this was his top pick - mainly due to the baffles which run contrary to normal, thereby (according to the reviewer) keeping the sides from collapsing inward. Supposedly this helped the pad feel wider. I did not notice this, as I slept on my girlfriends pad for a night and it felt about the same, space-wise, and much more comfortable in general.

There was also the issue of the built-in pillow, which really wasn't much except for a lump, and a lump that wasn't very comfortable at that. If they were going to go for a built-in pillow I think they should have gone all the way and made it an actual pillow, or had none at all.

On the plus side, the pad is light and packs pretty small. And it wasn't UNcomfortable, just not as super comfortable as was expected for the price.
