I was in Oahu's north shore a few years when I came across a Patagonia store. I bought a hoody fleece that to this day, is even more comfortable and cozy to throw on. R1 is the best mid layer and light in cold condition

I really like patagonia r1. it includes the two large interior drop in pockets and find multiple uses for them, Full zip when you feel too hot, allows maximum heat off loading without taking off your garment. Great layering piece when wearing a hat or a hooded outerwear piece.

Love all the R1 Products

I really like the two large interior drop in pockets and find multiple uses for them, including storing my Sawyer Squeeze or Mini Squeeze in sub freezing conditions. Full zip allows maximum heat off loading without taking off your garment. Think of topping a summit after a strenuous climb or scramble and needing to evaporate moisture as fast as possible without taking off your pack. As soon as your body temperature is re-regulated, you can start zipping it back up. Combines great with a full zip vest when you need to preserve core heat, but regulate depending on changing physical output rate. Great layering piece when wearing a hat or a hooded outerwear piece.

  • good option when wearing hat or hooded outerwear
Cons:
  • no thumb holes
  • can pill after repeated washings and dryings

R1 is just what I wanted!

I’m 5’9” and ~190lbs so I ordered a large without trying it on before hand. The large fits very well, not too baggy and not too tight. The arms are a tad long which are great to tuck the hands in on a cool day. The torso length is quite a bit longer than most other mid layers I have, but I really like it. It would fit great under a harness (I haven’t tried though). It doesn’t ride up when bending over to tie the shoes, however when sitting sometimes the front folds up at the bottom... not a big issue though.

R1 full zip jacket is better than 1/4 zip in ventilation of sweating during hard mountaineering and honey comb struction of inner layer is good at warmth & ventilation.
