CDT's Review of Primus OmniLite Ti Silencer

I've had my OmniLite Ti for about two years and used a 3rd party silent cap during that time. That cap was fine, but was rather heavy and depended upon a heat-generated interference fit to remain secure in the burner bell. From time to time the cap would separate from the burner bell and need to be reset; not a major issue, but somewhat tedious. Recently, I decided to give the Primus cap a try which comes securely mounted in a dedicated burner bell which screws onto the stove's burner base in place of the stove's original burner bell. It is worth noting that the original burner bell is vented to allow for combustion between the stove jet and the base of the flame plate (which is removed and set aside when using the 3rd party silent cap). The Primus burner bell and silent cap combination is not vented. This may help reduce the possibility of under-burn which could damage the cap (and to which the 3rd party cap may be more be more susceptible). That having been said, priming the stove seems to take marginally longer (and more fuel) with the Primus cap than when using the 3rd party arrangement. I suspect this is because the venting in the original burner bell allows the priming flame to have access to the inside of the burner bell and bottom of the silent cap which aids in vaporizing the the liquid fuel (white gas in my case). On balance, the Primus silent cap is a step forward. I am pleased with its performance and will continue to use it.
Pros:
  • Cap is securely mounted and reasonably light weight
Cons:
  • May take marginally longer/ more fuel to prime
