I've owned a lot of jackets
I have and still own a lot of jackets.
This jacket is probably one of my favorite jackets of all of them.
It is water resistant and wind resistant
It has a very warm soft inner lining material.
This jacket makes a great mid to outer layer.
I can wear it to temps down in the teens with a good midlayer under it.
It does a have a snug fit so I can't wear a big sweater underneath.
All in all its just a really good jacket.

Great jacket. Terrible front zipper.
I love everything about this jacket except the zipper. It’s fits me perfectly, and the quality is top notch. However, the left handed zipper is problematic. It could be because it is left-handed, and I am not accustomed to that. That said, it is not smooth and I have to consciously look down to make sure that it is in place before I pull it up.
Pros:
- Excellent Quality and fitment.

A great all-around climbing jacket
The Alpha Direct has exposed Polartech Alpha insulation lining the interior, with a Pertex shell material on the exterior. The insulation wicks moisture very well, and is also surprisingly warm for its light weight.
The jacket is quite slim-fitting, allowing it to be worn as a mid- or outer-layer. The sleeves are quite long, so a good jacket for someone with a high ape index but probably not ideal for folks with shorter arms. The hood has no adjustment points, but it works pretty well for me despite that. The fitted cuffs have a good amount of elasticity, making it easy to move them up around slim-fitting gloves.
The jacket is good for shoulder-season belaying, since it features a two-way zipper - great for operating an ATC or running a rope from a harness hard point.

Very versatile
Rab isn't overselling this jackets versatility. I've used it in temps from 30 to 65 so far and could go lower. It hasn't clammed up at all despite plenty of strenuous hiking in the Rockies. The outer has shed significant rain and plenty of wind. The special sauce is definitely the insulation though. Very soft. Dries very quickly. As the temp continues to fall, i'll still be using this for biking, under a ski shell, and just around town. Packs down fairly well and makes a comfortable pillow. Rab's sizing is very consistent for me and at 5'10, 150 a medium is perfect.
Pros:
- warm
- Versatility
- Active use
Cons:
- NONE
Best Used for:
- Cold to Cool Active Use
