Most Helpful Positive Review Excellent coat, very warm!
I live in Oregon and have resisted buying puffy coats, I'm pretty cold tolerant and like to make do with layered fleece. Just me, doesn't make sense really. I've gotten into winter camping lately and decided to give down jackets a go. I tried on many different kinds of expensive jacket you commonly...

Most Helpful Negative Review Great jacket if the color and fit are right for you
Bought this in a men's large - neon orange. The orange is really a true hunter's orange, and way too bright for our taste. Also, I'm a 6' 165 lb. male and the large was too tight under the armpits. Otherwise, a very, very well-made jacket and sorry it didn't work for me.

Rab Electron Jacket

by snowdayz, Verified Owner from MT, United States Written on February 12, 2021
Wanted a jacket I could throw on without a layer under. For technical stuff, I prefer multiple layers so I can peel off as needed. It's very warm! Temps are -15F and I strolled around with a light fleece under it and I was toasty. Quality and construction are top notch. I'm 6' and a stocky 190# and the extra large fits with a little room left over. Like the long sleeves. Undecided on the zipper that's on the European side.
Pros:
  • warm
  • I like the fit
  • Stylish as far as puffy coats go
Cons:
  • Zipper on wrong side
  • Pricey if not on sale

Cool Weather Gear

by GetOut, Verified Owner from IN, United States Written on January 26, 2021
Just received the Rab Electron. Overall quality and fit are great. Jacket is lightweight and pockets are better than expected based on earlier reviews. Plenty of room for a thin sock hat or gloves. Hood is large to accommodate a helmet, but pulls down tight with drawcords. The included stuff sack is a little larger than it needs to be, the jacket compresses quite well for packing. Will be a perfect addition to BWCA cool weather gear.

Rab Electron

by Brian Trudeau, Verified Owner from ID, United States Written on January 11, 2021
This jacket was purchased for active, outdoor activities, primarily snowshoeing. I usually am between an XL and L, and this jacket seems true to size. I am 6’ 200# with an athletic build and purchased the XL for layering beneath. We snowshoed yesterday, 1-10-21, above Baker City, OR at 7600 ft in 25 degree weather. I was wearing a t shirt only. The jacket performed perfectly. I was never cold ( didn’t expect to be) and never too hot ( I was worried about this). I felt as though the jacket provided plenty of freedom of movement, and it was light as well. However, if this jacket was designed for these types of activities, I might recommend pit zips. The back of my jacket was wet from sweat, and I think this could’ve been mitigated with those. Other than that, I am very pleased with my purchase.
Pros:
  • Lightweight, warm, great looking
  • light weight, warm, great looking
Cons:
  • Needs pit zips
  • needs pit zips
Best Used for:
  • Outdoor activities or casual

Warm, high quality, a couple weird features

by Sharpie, Verified Owner from CO, United States Written on December 6, 2020
This jacket has very high-quality, water-resistant down, and is very warm for its weight. It works well as a belay jacket in medium-cold temperatures, and also has a roomy fit to enable layering beneath it. It's surprisingly capable as an outer layer, with both the outer material and the water-resistant down increasing its performance in rough weather.

The helmet-compatible hood is pretty good with a helmet on, but isn't ideal if you aren't planning to wear one. The adjustment points on the hood just don't let you cinch it down enough to work well without a helmet, and the velcro tightening system isn't very refined.

The cuffs are very comfortable and work surprisingly well with either over- or under-cuff gloves.

The material is pretty loud, like a lot of down jackets. The clever baffle design maximizes heat retention, and does a great job for the weight of the jacket.

The stuff sack is probably my least favorite feature - partly because it's just bigger than it needs to be (it ends up being about the size of a high-quality shoulder-season sleeping bag), and because it has an uncomfortable large toggle on it that makes it less than ideal to pack into the inner chest pocket. I think a significantly smaller stuff sack (or ideally an inverted pocket) would have been better.
Pros:
  • QUALITY
  • warm
Cons:
  • Large hood
Best Used for:
  • climbing
  • Camping
  • Casual

High quality, warm down jacket!

by Gerald, from NY, United States Written on October 22, 2020
Very impressed with this jacket - I highly recommend for those who do winter sports or for those who just plain want to be warm walking around town! The jacket design shows that much thought has been used around intended use and long term durability.

Just right!

by Matthew B., Verified Owner from UT, United States Written on May 4, 2016
This jacket is made to be an intermediate coat...not too hot and not too thin...and comes through with flying colors! Before I tried it on, I was worried it would be too puffy...but it is much more form fitting (with a nice drop hem in the back) than most others out there (including Patagonia, Marmot, Mountain Hardware, etc.). It looks great!

It's warm but not overwhelming. You won't wear it when it's 65...but 15 - 45/50 is fantastic with only a short sleeve shirt underneath. With some layering or a shell, it could have a wider range. It is definitely more versatile than the above mentioned "down sweater" (I even wear it inside in the early mornings while the house heats up and don't overheat).

What got me hooked on the jacket was the elasticated cuffs. Most cuffs on down jackets are like a rubber band trying to close the sleeve off like a garbage sack. The Rab Electron has a killer cuff system that is unlike most other down jackets (trust me, you will love it and have a hard time going back to the "standard" rubber band enclosure sleeves).

Awesome Down Jacket

by Alex G., Verified Owner from NY, United States Written on December 31, 2015
I've been really happy with my RAB Electron over the past month. It's been cold in Seattle and my jacket has kept me warm in the cold but also seems to regulate my temperature when I'm inside. The jacket seems tough and has held up well in light rain and wind. Hood is very warm and fits on the face very nicely. Only thing lacking to me is a chest pocket.
