A Cut Above Other Budget Tents, But with a Serious Downside

by cdesfusa, from NM, United States Written on November 5, 2022
Overall, until most recently, I have been pleased with my purchase. I selected this one in particular because it is on the larger side, yet still relatively lightweight. The headroom was much less than I expected. I am 6'2". If you are the same height, you, too, may be disappointed there is very little headroom when attempting to sit up inside. It really is a lie-down tent. That aside, the design is quite good for a budget tent.

However, just last night in the backcountry, I fell victim to a serious flaw in the tent. The zipper on the front door of the rain fly became stuck in the zipper cover. I tried and tried to fix it, but it just wouldn't move. It's still stuck. The temperature was below freezing and it was pitch black outside. This is not something you want to have happen to you at night in the freezing cold. In my opinion, it's a serious flaw. I am actually regretting my choice, thinking I should have gone for a Lanshan, instead. It's zippers are reputedly reliable and easy to use.
Pros:
  • Pitches easily and is really tight
  • Roomy interior if you are only laying down
Cons:
  • Poor zipper performance
  • Shallow headroom
Best Used for:
  • Short backpacking trips
