cbslc's Review of Sierra Designs Meteor Lite Tents - 3 Person
My whole package weighs in at 4lbs 3 oz. This include 10 stakes, and all bags. I don't see needing all 10 stakes, it would have to be crazy windy for that. I used 4 stakes - each vestibule and at the mid of each head and toe side. The stakes have reflective cordage that is nice, but may not be necessary if you want to shed another ounce or so. Each stake weighed in at .35oz with the cordage and .3 without the cordage. The stakes seem high quality, but are only 6" or so, if you need long stakes for sand, you may need different stakes, but these should suffice for most soils. This pulls the fly out tight and keeps the tent well grounded. The vent at the top works well, unless there are winds blowing hard, then you get a little water and you have to exit the tent to close. There are 3 storage areas, one on each side at the head side and one in the "attic", it is sufficient, but some at the toes may have been nice - I tend to lose things in the tent. But the size is really nice. For my wife and I, we can easily sit upright and have lots of shoulder room. 3 big people would be tight, but still totally feasible. The pre-bent poles do make the walls very vertical, so the tent feels very big. There are a few color coded bits that are important to pay attention to and they do make setup pretty quick. Without instructions, we assembled the tent in just a few minutes, only fumbling for moment with the fly and where it should "start". Because we did not stake out the corners of the tent, we used the loops on the fly to hook under the pole at each corner. This worked well enough, but did not make the fly completely tight. Either the mids need to be staked out, or the corners of the fly need to be stake out with the floor for the fly to be taut. The poles lock into the floor at the webbing via aluminum holes that hold tight. We have used tents that in don't lock the poles in and it can be challenging to setup as the pole pop out when you go to put the next side in. The lock in prevents this, so again setup goes pretty fast. Zippers are much more sturdy than some other UL, but we still needed to use 2 hands to zip the main body zippers. As usual, the outer flap of the fly can get stuck on the zip, so be careful. I don't think I have owned a tent that doesn't do this, so meh. The fly zips go up and down, so if you really need to vent, you can use the upper vent, and zip the fly down a few inches, although, there is not built in way to prop this open, so it won't vent much. Overall I am impressed. Sierra Designs was able to use heavier materials than some other UL's and still achieve a light 3 person tent with lots of room.
