The Silva Ranger was top of the line 40 yrs. ago , the new ones appear to be high quality as well . The only reason I needed a new one , I lost old one.

Ranger CL compass points the way to quality
Got the Ranger CL because 1 - its what we train with in search and rescue; 2 - I have seen only one fail in over 100 students during navigation exams (and it was a MC dual, not the Ranger), and 3 - I have 3 reversed Bruntons in the last year (north became south suddenly according to the user; confirmed by observing and yes the three exhibit reversed magnetization). the capsule is tight in its socket (not wobble or shifting like other brands), the fluid dampens the needle fine, tilt adjustment is generous compared to others where there's so little height that the needle rubs against the lower or upper capsule surface too much and the declination adjustment is tight enough to not worry me about casual accidental readjustment (screw controlled gear I think).
