Dudley Driscoll's Review of Soto Compact Refillable Lantern

FYI to everyone who loves this great little lantern - it is and exact reproduction of the Brunton Glorb lantern that was discontinued a few years ago. I have TWO Glorb lanterns & value them immensely over the past decade, especially on winter camping trips when the extra heat a mantle light throws is much appreciated inside a tent or tipi. The light from the mantle is more than enough to light up your campsite as you move around a fire/stove, during set up or while chopping firewood.
I'll mention that I easily rigged a suspension for the lantern with 2 pieces of small aluminum chain (about 20 cm), a mini carabiner (top) & 2 small key rings placed diagonally on 2 of the chrome globe supports so they slide down for folding. Too bad I can't attach a photo.
Note that the original Brunton mantles were fairly fragile after burning & almost ALWAYS needed to be replaced after every move (every night if you traveled daily). I suspect these mantles are just as fragile. At least now I can finally replace my stock of mantles because I carry one for every night of travel, plus a spare!!
Also you can easily refill the lantern with just a standard Ronson, etc. butane lighter fuel canister if you don't want to carry a bulky isobutane can & adapter (of course, I believe isobutane burns better in colder weather but I never really had problems with the Glorb at -20 C or worse).
Enjoy ;-)
