Greg's Review of Soto WindMaster Stove with 4Flex Pot Support
This is the best canister stove I have ever seen or used. My comparison is with the Primus Crux stove - similar in configuration (mostly enclosed mixing fuel-air chamber) and 3 Kilowatt rating and about the same size burner head and also a canister stove - it is a good stove too- just not as good as the Soto.
Pros: It has about a 3.3Killowatt rating, which exceeds all other regulated stoves I know. This saves time and fuel.
It has a very stable flame and good throttle control at low simmer, even in light wind. - better than non regulated stoves like the Primus Crux.
It is lighter than most regulated stoves and has a built in spark igniter. It will operate in a moderate rain without a pot on top, even at simmer level. - though starting may require an external lighting item (match, lighter) if the built-in sparker is wet.
Cons: It is slightly taller (distance between canister top to pot bottom) than many other stoves, including 3/4" taller than the Primus crux. This does make the use of a canister support like the Primus more important to reduce pot wobbling during stirring or wind or infirm soil base.
It is an isobutane canister type stove, so it shares with all such stoves the risks of not operating at very cold temperature - despite implications of the manufacturer. The canisters will simply not produce any pressure if cold enough. I tested this stove vs a Primus Crux (non-regulated) with a "Rocket Fuel" canister at 12 deg F (-11 deg C). At full throttle, the Soto produced nearly full flame vs a much reduced flame with the Primus . So there is a cold temperature advantage, but it does not eliminate the risk of non-operation altogether at even colder temps.
It is a bit more expensive than other stoves, even regulated ones. At each camp site, it requires the application of the pot support (4-flex or tri-flex) to the burner head- an annoyance with numb fingers and risk of part loss.
