Sahat Y.'s Review of Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm Max Sleeping Pad - Past Season
I returned my Therm-A-Rest NeoAir Xlite 2015 sleeping pad because I did not like the crinkly sound it was making. Not only was it super loud when moving around, but inflating it would almost always result in dizziness. Sure, you can buy a pump sack for it, but that's an extra cost for an already expensive sleeping pad. I paid $149 for the Therm-A-Rest NeoAir Xlite.
I was so certain that I would never get another Therm-A-Rest sleeping pad. After looking at other brands like Nemo and Exped, reading a lot of reviews and forums discussions, I couldn't find anything better than Therm-A-Rest NeoAir XTherm regardless of the price. My friend bought the Exped Downmat 9 XP, and while it is nice and comfy, that thing is humongous and heavy and very difficult to pack down.
Between XTherm and XTherm Max, the Max version wins hands down. The weight difference is negligible, but the comfort of having a rectangular shaped sleeping pad is totally worth it.
This sleeping pad comes with a black stuff sack (slightly oversized, too tall) and a large silver pump sack. I believe the large pump sack is new for this year's edition; previously it was too small to be usable for inflating. I am really glad Therm-A-Rest has included it because it makes such a big difference compared to inflating the sleeping pad with mouth.
As for crinkly sound, it practically does not exist if you inflate the sleeping pad completely. But the more you deflate it, the more noticeable is the sound when you shift on your sleeping pad.
XTherm with its 5.7 R-value is super warm compared to my Nemo Cosmo Air sleeping pad which I still have as a backup.
In conclusion, you will not be disappointed with NeoAir Xtherm Max. You will not find a better mattress that is this warm, comfy and so light (only 490g). I only paid $159 for it, instead of the retail price of $199. If you find a better price elsewhere be sure to take advantage of Campsaver's price match policy! I am giving 5-stars not only to Therm-A-Rest NeoAir XTherm Max sleeping pad, but also to the Campsaver for its excellent customer service, flexible return policy and unmatched price matching.
