Reviews & Ratings for Western Mountaineering Flash Pants - Mens

These down pants are a major improvement over the synthetic puffy pants I have used in the past for backpacking. They are warmer and they pack down smaller. Excellent quality in the workmanship. Glad I splurged and got them.

These are initial impressions, but these pants seem like the best option for down pants when used as a terminal piece. They are super light (even lighter than many other less warm options), but they appear to have just enough durability for kicking around camp. They are hardly fashionable, but I guess you can’t have everything.

I have been upping my game when it comes to winter backpacking. I recently took advantage of the big snow system sweeping across the country to deliberately plant myself in the middle of very cold temps and heavy snow in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I already most of my layers but wanted a warmer pair of down pants than my current Montbell version. Not only did Camp Saver have the Western Mountaineering Flash pants in stock and in my size, but they were able to get them to me quickly with short notice so that I could take them on my trip. The pants performed great. I appreciated the durable fabric on the seat area. If I was going to be doing any expedition type of hiking where I was wearing the pants while underway, I'd want to move up to the Flight pants with zippers, more down, and burlier fabric, but for this excursion and most of my likely winter travel in the backcountry, these plants will be perfect. Kudos to Western Mountaineering and Camp Saver.

They are very nice. They have a really good loft. They are very warm. No front zipper or side zippers. They have a waistband that can be tightened if needed. I would recommend them to be used for under outer layer.

Very lightweight very comfortable could be used as a baselayer or outside when very cold I wear mine around the house. Made from RFD down at 850 Gil power they are very lightweight and compress to hardly take any space. So lightweight I forget I have mine on.
Pros:
warm and cozy
Cons:
None
Best Used for:
Normial activity outdoors in cold

I ordered a size too small--returned. Larger size was out of stock, so I ordered the Flight pants. Flash pants would have fit most of my needs, but would be better with a zip fly if worn under other garments (same for flight pants). I don't think that would be an issue with unisex sizing in M & L--greater convenience for men, not inconvenient for women.
