Steve's Review of WildCountry Coshee Micro Tent - 1 Person

This isn't necessarily a bad tent. The materials and construction are good and the weight is acceptable given the materials, but there's a lot to not like about it.

It has a sloppy pitch. Like, you see those pole clips in the photo? They have zero tension when you clip them in. They just sort of flop around loosely and guying out the two guy points near the blue pole only makes it worse at those clip points. I think it'll work, it's just sloppy and makes for a loose pitch. The shock cord stake points on the corners don't help either, so just cut those off and replace them with something that's not rubber bands.

There's a lot of unnecessary weight here. The tent body connects to the fly at the pole points with four buckles and they are way bigger than they need to be. I may look for a way to cut these buckles off and replace them with something else entirely. There's also a couple straps under there that run the width of the fly and they don't need to be so heavy duty. The pole clips are also much bigger than necessary. If they downsized these things and made the tent body full mesh this would be a lighter tent than it is.

There's almost no mesh in either the tent body or the fly, so it's going to be really hot and humid in anything but the coolest temperatures. I knew this, though, and bought it for cool weather camping, but it deserves mentioning.

The vestibule could be bigger. Not much, even an extra 3 inches would make it much more useful.

In total there's like 13 stake points but the tent comes with only 7 stakes. We all know why tent companies do this, but they could've accomplished the same thing by using lighter straps and buckles. They are nice stakes, though.

Fortunately, none of this is terribly important and the price does come in at something reasonable, especially if you can hook a discount. It also doesn't leak, so I'm going to keep it and I'm going to use it (probably a lot) once it starts cooling off again, but every time I do I'm going to be disappointed by all the missed opportunities to make this a much better tent than it is.
Pros:
  • Good price
  • Good materials
  • Reasonably light
  • Pitches fast
Cons:
  • Sloppy pitch
  • Very small vestibule
  • Missed opportunities to shave weight
Best Used for:
  • Backpacking
  • Stealth camping
  • Emergency shelter
