PROBLEMS REMOVING....Yakima FullTilt4 Hitch Bike Carrier

by Paul G., Written on January 22, 2015
I love all the features of the FullTilt4 but the one I got shipped to me from Campsaver had a big problem. I use it on a 1.25" hitch. What the problem is the carrier easily goes onto the hitch, but when I tried to remove the rack off the car, the button you pushed to retract the autopin didn't work. It took 2 people to remove the rack, one using a screw driver pushing the actual pin in and the other pulling the rack out of the hitch. I called Yakima and they said it was a problem on earlier racks and they have fixed the problem. So they sent me a replacement bike carrier and I had it in 2 days. Then I put it on the car and had exactly the same problem. After removing it again with screw driver and playing with it, I discovered why it didn't work. To install the rack you slide the rack into the hitch, the autopin snaps into the hitch hole & then you tighten the locking speedknob. To remove the carrier, you need to unlock & loosen the speedknob, but when loosen the speedknob all the way out, it actually blocks the autopin button which makes it impossible to remove the rack. Good idea but the designers really messed up on this feature. Yakima should of at least put in instructions NOT to loosen the speedknob all the way out but they didn't. Now I understand how to remove it, everything is fine. So what you need to do is push on the autopin button & loosen the speedknob at the same time & as soon as the button retracts the autopin, STOP TURNING THE SPEEDKNOB and remove the rack. ...
