Used for backpacking I quickly learned to use fuel such as the dry filament strands of spruce and pine, or other VERY VERY small twigs, not anything as large as even a pencil, and, stir(poke)the residue in the fire cup a little every so often to get a complete burn. I do destination backpacking, not distance. So, weight\size is not a factor. I only need hot water for cooking, and the M Kelly is perfect. With well thought out preperation, having fuel ready to burn, and, the kettle full of water, it does boil acceptably fast.
