Comments about Phantom 15 Sleeping Bag (800 Down):

This is a very nice bag. I was surprised at how roomy it is for its weight, there's no part of me which feels unnecessarily constricted in it. Very comfortable and the full length zipper adds to its versatility. The hood and draft collar are the best I've ever seen. The range of adjustments and well thought out shape make for a very tight seal which is very comfortable. It also packs down very small. No issues with zipper snags yet, much superior to my old bag in that department. I love this bag.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Phantom 15 Sleeping Bag (800 Down):

The Mountain Hardware Phantom 15 is an excellent bag.

It's very comfortable, has an accurate temperature rating, and packs very light.

Unfortunately, the zipper does tend to snag very easily. Once it snags, it can take more than a little effort to un-snag it in well-lit conditions, let alone the darkness of the midnight backcountry. But unless you need to get out of your bag double-time, it shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

All in all, it's a nicely crafted bag with cool features that betray its excellent packed weight.

Comments about Phantom 15 Sleeping Bag (800 Down):

Got this bag for a 4 night trip into the Wind River Mountains in mid-June. We were on snow most of the way with night-time temps down to the low 20's F, sleeping in a megamid (drafty). I loved this sleeping bag, it kept me toasty warm; I never had to really cinch it up, and often had it partly unzipped. The weight and compressability are major plusses compared to my old synthetic bag. I like the fact that it's got a draft-collar, which not all ultra-lite bags do.

The only minus is that the zipper took a lot of attention to avoid snagging. Not a big deal, I have never slept in a bag that this wasn't the case.

I'm 6'1" and the regular size fit me fine, although I'd recommend a long for anyone taller.

      Questions & Answers

Q & A For The Mountain Hardwear Phantom 15 Sleeping Bag (800 Down)

Technology Used In The Phantom 15 Sleeping Bag (800 Down)

      Baffled Construction

Baffles are chambers created between the outer shell and inner liner of a sleeping bag or jacket. These chambers hold the insulation and create an even distribution, preventing unwanted grouping of insulation. There are different types of baffles. A "stitched-through" baffle joins the outer shell and inner liner together by means of direct stitching. Heat loss through seams is a disadvantage of the stitched through baffle. Optimal warmth is achieved through the use of a "box wall" style baffle. This method uses additional material between the outer and inner materials to create a wall that unites the two layers and creates a slightly larger and more uniform baffle. Different variations on the box wall positioning create a variety of advanced baffle systems.

      Down Insulation

Water foul, like geese and duck, actually provide one of the most efficient forms of insulation available. Down is the light, fluffy undercoating at the base of the feathers of waterfowl. Down is a multi-dimensional structure that insulates by creating pockets of still air that retain body heat. Down is highly breathable and exceptionally comfortable. It is longer lasting and much more compressible than synthetic insulation. A disadvantage of down insulation is its loss of efficiency in wet conditions. It will also take much longer to dry than a synthetic insulation. Down is available in different fill powers. Fill power is defined by the amount of loft that is gained under loft test conditions. The higher the fill power number the greater the loft and the greater the performance of the down insulation. Fill powers may range from 500 fill to 900+ fill power.
