Product Info for BearVault BV500 Journey Bear Resistant Food Canister

The BearVault Bear-Proof Survival Canister was developed by experienced backpackers who had seen many ways that bears and other animals were able to get into human supplies. This Bear Protection from BearVault would be a welcome piece of equipment for backpackers, hunters, and campers. BearVault Bear-Proof Polycarbonate Canisters are lightweight yet rugged enough to survive repeated impact without shattering. And they are transparent so you can see the contents even while they are closed up tight. Protect your food or valuables from grizzlies, black bears, and other clever critters with a BearVault Rugged Bear-Proof Container.image

Features of BearVault Journey Bear Resistant Food Canister

  • Specifically designed to be wide, round and slippery to reduce leverage points for entry from bear jaws, claws and paws
  • Weight is low and volume is high, thanks to the durable, polycarbonate construction
  • Transparent canister is easy to see into and doesnt require you to empty the contents of the container to find specific items
  • Wide opening allows you to reach all the way in to find your tasty treats
  • Screw-on lid is intuitive and secure, and doesnt require extra tools to operate; no need to overtighten
  • Strap guides aid in strapping and packing canister to your preference; an ideal place for your can is inside your pack just above your sleeping bag
  • Rounded corners allow for smooth packing and removal
  • Container doubles as a camp stool, a luxury most backpackers leave behind; close lid fully when using as a stool to preserve the screw-top threads

The BV Bear Cannister is all that it promises - lightweight, durable, etc. However, due to a thumb injury, I had difficulty opening it up with my hands only - the tip of a key or coin allowed me to do so by applying pressure with no problem.

Csmpsaver is easy to deal with and this item is going to be exactly what I’m wanting to secure my food. I had read other reviews about the difficulty unscrewing the lid and checked that issue out right off the bat. I found that after practicing 5 or 6 times that I’d become very comfortable with getting the locking tabs past the locking stops. Sure, it’s not easy but there’s a r...

Got the BV 450 its a very compact can and the large opening makes it very easy to load and unload. The Garcia style cans are easier to open but the larger opening on the BV makes it worth the extra effort. I can get 4 days worth of food easily in there but I use mostly grocery store food (oatmeal, mac'n cheese, foil packed tuna and beef) which are about 1/2 the volume of dehydr...

One of those items that you hope never really gets tested. Needed to have for certain areas that I will be hiking in Oregon and Cali. Seems well made. It is a little hard to open, but that's the point. I have read some reviews about using a card or key to help open the lid. Haven't tried that yet, but if you don't have strong hands, or good grip, it will definitively be hard to...

I used the BV450 for a solo five day backpacking trip in Yosemite National Park and a three day trans-Catalina hike. This cannister was perfect. The cannister kept my food safe. The weight of the cannister is the price to pay for being responsible. I taped an old plastic membership card to the top of my BV450. You will find in cold weather the tab is difficult to press. Pl...

I like that it is smaller than most bear canisters. It is good for an overnight and takes up less space in your pack. It meets the requirements of Rocky Mountain National Park. I wish these weren’t so heavy though.

Questions & Answers for BearVault BV500 Journey Bear Resistant Food Canister
Q I noticed that the bear canister is airtight. Is it also waterproof? Is it any good for buying a cache?
A
Expert Answer

It is certainly airtight, and I doubt water would get inside. It does not have an o-ring, so I wouldn't submerge the thing, but you could certainly make an o-ring if you needed to.
