I purchased these hiking poles to help me walk up and down the wooded trails here in hilly southern Indiana. I've taken about 15 hikes of about 3 to 4 miles and the poles are making a huge difference. They allow me to walk safely especially on muddy slopes. They give my arms a great workout too. I purchased these from CampSaver in early Jan 2010 (great price!) after trying out a pair of Leki poles from a local store and reading a lot of reviews. Did not like locking feature on Leki's, especially in cold weather. The Black Diamond poles are great and help me as much or even more going up than going down. I had never used treking poles before but once you get the rhythm down, they are great! They are lightweight, adsorb shock, easy to adjust, and take that extra bit of stress off the knees. Another advantage is maintaining balance in 'rocky' situations. I like 'um.
I like the trail back pole a LOT better.
the trail back shock are a too flexible for someone 6'1 180lba using 125cm setting; I don't know why.
their grip is more comfortable then the trail back grip, but it depends on whether you like rubber or foam.
I prefer the rubber.
the wrist strap are a >nightmare
