The Patagonia R1 Hoody is a great midlayer due to its Polartec Power Dy technology that utilizes a high/low interior grid construction to allow for a warm and breathable layer. The minimalistic design of the balaclava hood allows for a snug fit around the head, and under a helmet, if needed. With comfort in mind, the R1 was designed with raglan style sleeves for comfort while wearing a pack and a minimal bulk design at the hem for wearing under a harness. This hoody was designed with the outdoors in mind.

Snug-fitting, balaclava-style hood fits comfortably under a helmet strap; center-front Slim Zip with a soft, kissing-welt zipper garage and chin flap for next-to-skin comfort
Variable Conditions Cuff has discreet, on-seam thumb loops for added coverage; a spiral-seam construction allows sleeves to push up easily without constricting forearms
One left chest pocket has Slim Zip install and clean-finished zipper garage
Longer torso for comfort under a harness or a pack waistbelt

Used this @ J. Tree when the weather was in the mid 40's to low 50's. It kept me warm but not too warm while climbing under those conditions while just wearing a base layer underneath. Nice fleece for autumn and winter. I use it over smartwool nts 250 base layer for extra warmth. It is ultra warm and yes, it is a must buy item. I have one hooded and 2 pullover. I love the pullover version for it weight!
I measured the R1 Hoody and it is about 1 inch longer than the R1 Pullover. Remind you that this was a flat measurement. But, I think that this is ideally what you are looking for. Thanks
