Tropical rain forests share at least one thing with the Patagonia Ice Cap: wet weather. For trekking and hiking in drenching conditions, Patagonia's Torrentshell Jacket provides 2.5-layer waterproof/breathable protection that's durable, lightweight and without frills. The jacket stuffs into one of two zippered handwarmer pockets (and has a clip-in loop); the hood fits snugly over a helmet, rolls down, stows away, and has a laminated visor; and the center zipper has exterior and interior storm flaps. With pit zips for added ventilation and a drawcord hem.

This jacket has some great features that are not found on most jackets. There are zippers under the arm pits to allow for breathability and velcro at the wrists. Both the bottom of the jacket and the hood can be cinched to keep the elements out. The color is vibrant and the fabric is high quality.

While this shell is available in very attractive jewel colors and is made of a soft waterproof GoreTex fabric exterior, it has no lining and is a pretty thin basic shell. I already own two such shells, and I wanted a new waterproof shell with a lining for hiking, cross-country skiing and dog walking in the Sierras spring, fall and winter. This jacket was PERFECT!! Size Small was very true to size, and the jacket is more fitted ~ I am a size 27-28 waist and 5'6" tall, 130lbs ~ If you prefer a bit more room to maybe wear a sweater underneath you might want to size up :)
