Why is the footprint that comes with the tent so much smaller than the tent bottom itself? — 1 Answer

It should be slightly smaller, but not substantially smaller. If water is able to get on top of the footprint it will puddle in between the footprint and the tent floor. Although tent floors are waterproof, if there is any sort of abrasion then the water can leak up into the tent. The footprint is made smaller than the floor to prevent this from happening.
