The Whisperlite stove is designed to be used with white gas only. The way you can tell the difference is the generating tube, or the tube that passes over the burner and distributes the fuel to the jet. The Whisperlite has a smaller diameter than the the Whisperlite International, and the Whisperlite Universal is still larger.

Another way to differentiate is by determining whether or not the stove has a fiberglass wick on the collecting tray at the base. This wick is for kerosene fuel and is only seen on MSR's multi-fuel stoves. If you don't see a wick you can be assured that the stove is white gas only. Both stoves use the same standard pump. The only stove that uses a different pump is the DragonFly.
