Will the stove burn alcohol in the msr bottle? Thanks!

The stove will burn liquid fuel from an MSR bottle (sold separately), but the flame will not travel back into the bottle.

How adjustable is the flame/heat output. Can it simmer like dragonfly or just roar?

The MSR Whisperlite Universal Stove features a twisting component which controls how much fuel is being released from the fuel canister, which directly controls the intensity of the flame. This can be adjusted to release as little fuel possible while still maintaining a flame. Having the fuel release at this low level should result in just a low simmer.

Does it also come with the round heat shield that you can place the stove on while using it? The MSR website says that it does but some online retailers have told me that it does not include the heat shield (round shield you can sit the base on) or the windscreen.

Includes: Fuel Pump, Windscreen, Canister Stand, Storage Bag with Zippered Pouch, Additional O-rings, Liquid Fuel Head, Gas & Kerosene Jets, Stove Tool (w/ bottle opener), Silicon Lube for Fuel Pump, and an Instruction Book

The stove includes: Fuel Pump, Windscreen, Canister Stand, Storage Bg with Zippered Pouch, Additional O-rings, Liquid Fuel Head, Gas & Kerosene Jets, Stove Tool (w/ bottle opener), Silicon Lube for Fuel Pump, and an Instruction Book.

Does the stove come with the necesary valves?

This stove will include the valves, but the canisters and fuel bottles are sold separately.
