Does the pen need to be touching the water to work, or is it proximity based? I'm mainly wondering how you would recommend keeping the rim of the water bottle sterile as well as the water within. — 1 Answer

From SteriPEN's site: Misconception 5: SteriPEN Doesn’t Eliminate Microorganisms on the Threads, Rim or Lids of Bottles

Microorganisms in such small levels are rarely dangerous, however, this issue can be addressed by simply drying the water off the lid, rim and threads of the bottle with a towel, bandana, etc.
