deep enough for side sleepers

by John, from UT, United States Written on August 13, 2020
Amazingly light and small when rolled up. Very comfy to sleep on because it is actually quite deep - 3 plus inches. I've paired it with a "pumphouse" so that end of the day blowing up your pad for 15 breaths is no effort at all. My only disappointment was that my existing "pumphouse" from a different company did not fit the BA valve and was "forced" to buy BA's version. No problem, it was on sale at Campsaver anyway!
Pros:
  • Super light weight
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • backpacking, thru hiking, camping
Would recommend: Yes

Very light!

by Frequent user, Verified Owner from CA, United States Written on June 3, 2020
I was looking for an ultralight sleeping pad that was on the thicker side and researched several brands. Big Agness consistently had the best reviews. I used the pad last weekend in the mountains and it performed admirably. It was really slippery when combined with my sleeping bag though which is both items’ issue. Have to figure out a lightweight fix for that as there really aren’t many perfectly flat spots on a mountain...
Pros:
  • ultra light
Cons:
  • Could get punctured easily
Best Used for:
  • Anything

Fills a niche

by hooch, from NH, United States Written on May 26, 2018
Big Agnes AXL precisely fills a niche: very light weight, minimal packing space, durable enough, thick enough for adequate comfort on reasonably flat surfaces. It has become my go-to pad when I need to stow the pad inside the pack which happens when the pack is being sent ahead by UPS or any of the shipping services. For canoeing with once-through portages carrying both the canoe and the pack all weights need to be minimized and the Big Agnes AXL fills the bill. Developed and much-used trail tenting sites usually have flat/smooth enough surfaces for Big Agnes AXL; if not I spread a jacket or sweater over the tent footprint or floor of an old and tired back-country shelter and I sleep just fine. Adds no extra r-factor insulation but that's just one of the compromises to fill this niche. So the Big Agnes AXL is one of the three sleeping pads that have earned space in my closet of backpacking gear.
Pros:
  • Light weight & minimal space.
Cons:
  • Requires about 20 puffs to inflate.
Best Used for:
  • Minimal space and weight.
