Dean D.'s Review of Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL4 Tent, 4 Person, 3 Season
Getting late and dark, I'm by myself in my yard to try out this tent. The set up instructions are sewn into the bag that holds everything. No drawings or pictures in the instructions, I'm tired, read the instructions if I can't figure it out. Laid out the tent. Staked the corners. The tent laid out is a big rectangle. There are only two poles. The big pole assembly is shock corded, comes together in a center hub. Plugged in the shock corded pole ends to form a large four leg pole structure, and plugged in the four color coded ends to the matching color tabs on the tent corners. The tent has clips that attach to the poles, and the tent is up. The short shock corded pole goes from door to door above the other pole structure from the plug in spots on the tent above the doors. I found it best to attach the two top tent clips to the short pole. This tent is easy for one person to set up. Now the fly. The fly has color coded plastic corner inserts that match the tent color tabs so you can get the fly oriented to match the tent. The fly has three Velcro loops per pole to attach to the poles. The Velcro loops are a pain to attach to the poles while the fly is flapping around. You are between the tent and fly attaching the Velcro loops to the poles. Then I attached the color coded corner fly plastic corner inserts into the color coded tent tabs, and called it a night. The fly has one ceiling vent with a short stick that holds the vent open. It was a calm night so I didn't tie the tent down or mess with the door openings. Measurements as set up, 92" long (says 96"), 82" wide (says 86"), 52" tall (says 50"). Consistent with my Big Agnes experience, I can't stretch the tent out to match their floor dimensions, but the height is as advertised or better. I'm tall so I slept the 92" way in a Rab 32 degree sleeping bag, and Big Agnes insulated AXL sleeping pad. Got down to 30 degrees, warm and comfortable. Light intermittent rain and frost that night, not wet inside. No real wind, so I can't comment on that. This a great three season tent for three adults (four is pushing it). At 5.7 pounds, my wife and I are going to love having a roomy tent light enough to carry.
Pros:
Roomy and light
Cons:
Velcro loops on fly
Best Used for:
3 season backpacking for 3
Would Recommend:
Yes
