Most Helpful Negative Review Basic Headlamp with poor construction.
This is a basic headlamp without any bells or whistles. Unfortunately, Black Diamond seems to have done the bare minimum to make this light. The strap quality is ok for the price but the lamp digs into your head when it is tilted down. The light is bright and the dimming features do work well. However, my biggest disappointment is in the waterproofing and construction. The lamp opens up with a cheap plastic clip and it is clear there is no O-ring or any real seal to keep the batteries dry. After a while the clip also gets worn out and makes the lamp too easy to open. All in all I really dont t...

Nice size and uses AAA batteries

This headlamp is a good size and luckily uses AAA batteries rather than lithium button batteries. The light is plenty bright and the strap is about as comfortable as competitors' lights. I recommend it!

Comments after extensive use

With the nice low price, I "moved up" to the Astro since it had 250 lumens instead of the Ion's 150. I have found the following tho:
1) Though the dimming feature is great (and similar to the Ion's), the light distribution is very wide. This is fine in camp, but too wide/diffuse for walking on a trail. I have gone back to the Ion for that.
2) As someone else noted, the headlamp causes pressure/marks on the forehead. This is due to it being rather heavy for just a two-AA battery unit.
3) For a two AA battery unit, the battery life is only average even though only 250 lumens output (I use maximum at all times given the above of item #1).
So, as a general use/camp headlamp, would be fine, but very unsuccessful as a trail lamp.

Your mileage may vary,
Katniss
Pros:
  • rugged
  • inexpensive
Cons:
  • Heavy per lumen
  • Too diffuse
Best Used for:
  • camp

Fantastic head light

by BigBev, from OH, United States Written on February 12, 2019
I ordered 2 of these headlamps. The light goes from very bright to dim. You can set it any where in between. They will be great for night hiking and night camping. The light can also be set to blink on and off. The head band is of good quality and should last a long time. The headlamp will come in handy when the electric goes out. I think this is a great light.
Pros:
  • can set from bright to dim or any where in between
Cons:
  • NONE
Best Used for:
  • Night hiking and night camping
