Reviews & Ratings for Black Diamond Camalot Z4
— 7 reviews — Page 1
Black Diamond makes some awesome little cams. These Z4s are so much easier to trust in awkward placements or in places where the stem needs to be able to bend around or over an edge! The stem really stays pretty rigid while you’re placing it and then bends over edges nicely and is protected by the sheath. Even though it’s plastic its extremely durable and I’ve yet to see a broken one. Also big thanks to CampSaver for the good pricing and quick shipping!

These Z4 cams have become almost standard rack issue in the Sierra granite cracks. I haven't taken a big whipper on one yet but with intelligent placement I am confident in this hardware. Great in Moab wall work too.

Z4s are my go-to free climbing small cams. They are lightweight, easy to place, and flexible. They work great for granite and pin scars. Totems do outshine in some situations (especially aid), but for general free climbing these are hard to beat. They aren't bulletproof, if you take whips on the smaller ones they have a tendency to kink. The heads are also softer alloy aluminum so they can deform a bit when whipped on, but I've never had one rip on me and that's what really matters.
Pros:
Lightweight
flexible
Easy to place
Cons:
softer alloy
Best Used for:
free climbing

First Z4 - slick design, no complaints so far. Always takes a few uses to trust tiny gear, but suspect it will be as bomber as other BD cams. Looking forward to getting years of use out of this piece.

In the single stem size, you can feel the wire as you retract the trigger. The smaller ones are not as stiff as I would like when retracted but also not floppy. The larger sizes are are fine. They are longer than the C4s so easier to place deeper.

I took one whipper on this and was really happy it was such a bomber placement but now the stem is bent/ twisted after just one fall. The piece did what it was supposed to do but it looks pretty out of shape now

I’m really enjoying the use I’ve got out of my Z4s thus far. I was able to find plenty of good placements for them. This is my first set of cams in the range, but they are considered to be a great improvement by my climbing partner over the X4s. Looking forward to getting doubles.
