Feel like silk - wear like iron

Written on Aug 13, 2016

I’m used to wearing wool socks when hiking for their moisture wicking properties, as well as their ability to stay fresh smelling after a few days on the trail. Previously I would wear silk sock liners to provide a slick smooth moisture wicking layer to reduce the chance of blisters. With these Smart Wool Phd socks, I no longer need the silk. These sock are light, very smooth, breathe well and wick very well. Minor pilling, but a great addition to my hiking kit nonetheless!

Best for Hauling Water

It can be tough to get your water bottles from your pack’s side pockets while hiking, and even tougher to return them. This summer has been dry and hot in New England, and a large reservoir helps one make it to the next stream. This one is excellent - wide mouth to allow you to add ice cubes at home and simplify cleaning and drying, a good non-leaking quick disconnect for the feed tube, and a bite valve that works for me. It is also made of nearly indestructible plastic, and the slide closure doubles as an easy-to-use carry handle. Only wish it came with a valve cover and a magnetic valve clip to hook to my straps. Others than that, a perfect solution to keep hydrated while on the move.
