Super Light and Warm!

Written on Dec 06, 2016

I used my Ghost Whisperer Hood Down Jacket on the trail this weekend. You can appreciate the warmth of this jacket almost immediately when you put it on. We experienced temps down into the 30’s and 40’s with sustained winds between 30-40 mph at about 2100’ elevation. I paired the Ghost Whisperer with a hardshell jacket cover and stayed considerably warm. I slept in a hammock with a down sleeping bag and kept my Ghost Whisperer jacket on as well. Wind gusts were measured between 50-60 mph and I stayed toasty warm through the night. I was very glad that I bought the hooded version. I also hiked the next day through the storm wearing the jacket under my shell which probably was not the best idea since moisture decreases the insulation value of down and I was sweating while moving. I would get a little chill when I stopped moving after several minutes but that was a misuse problem that I won’t repeat coupled with wet hands, legs, and feet. My scale has the jacket at 8.4 oz and I bought a waterproof stuff sack that compresses it down to about 5”x6”. Overall the jacket performed very well and I would highly recommend it.

Platypus Gravityworks Works

Written on Apr 17, 2016

Used my new Platypus Gravityworks filter over the weekend and it worked very nicely. Much easier than pumping and less moving parts to worry about breaking while on the trail. It filtered quickly and I didn't use the clean bag, just hung the dirty water and filtered straight to my water bladder. I won't carry the clean bag anymore unless I'm responsible for the clean water of a group trip in order to save weight. I highly recommend the product so far with my single use.

Great Lightweight Tent

Written on Feb 01, 2016

I bought this tent for me and my 8 year old son to use on the trail due to it being advertised as lightweight. When weighed it actually came in under the advertised weight at 2lbs 14oz. We recently used it on a cold dry night. I am 5'11" and have just a couple inches to spare in the head and foot area when lying down. Plenty of room to sit up inside if you're sitting in the middle of the tent. For one person, laying diagonally would potentially provide more room. There was enough width space for me and my son and our two small sleeping mats.

There was minimal condensation the next morning. My sleeping bag was dry and I was definitely touching the side of the tent throughout the night at times. Packing back up in the morning, as I was removing bags and mats from the tent, I did notice some small puddles of water on the tent floor from the condensation falling but I never had a problem with it while I was in the tent. Those puddles were probably caused by all the movement of packing up.

Overall I liked the tent and think it will work well for us on future trips. I would definitely recommend this tent for those who are searching for a lightweight and cost efficient option!
