Warm, slim-fitting fleece

Written on Nov 05, 2017

This jacket is warm for its light weight. I love the slim fit; it's great for layering. Also, while the hood is large enough for a ski/snowboard/climbing helmet, its shape allows it still to be comfortably when not wearing your helmet, too!
Finally, it's Fjallraven, so it is ethically produced!

A (near) Perfect Comppanion

Written on Nov 01, 2017

This folder feels nicer in my hand than any other folding knife I have ever owned. So, while it does not feel as good as a fixed-blade due to the blade channel, it is as close as any folder I have held has come. Some complain of the curly birch handle, but I find it beautiful. As for the blade, I love the Scandinavian grind and it came razor sharp from the factory (as is usual for Helle). As a final note, these knives are handmade. As such, some appreciate the idea of human craftsmanship, as do I, and some complain about the minor imperfections you may encounter. The two sides of my Bleja's handle, for example, are not perfectly symmetrical, and the screws vary a little in their depth. Some may see this with a critical eye; I see it as natural variation from the working of an artist or craftsman.

A Beautiful, Functional Replica

Written on Oct 14, 2017

Based on a Viking utility knife found in an archaeological dig, this knife truly looks and feels like I am holding history in my hands... the handle is exceptionally comfortable, even in its simplicity. The balance of the Viking is well-placed, just at the front of the handle, near the blade's beginning. The blade comes razor-sharp from the factory and holds its edge exceptionally well, and the fit and finish is impeccable. While the blade is wider than I am used to with my Morakniv, the Helle Viking carves exceptionally well when crafting around camp. My only issue with the Helle Viking is that it is so beautiful with its rustic, course sides (they left the sides unpolished after heat treating on purpose), that I am hesitant to use it as my go-to crafting/camping knife, because I would like to preserve its historic aesthetic, and I have noticed that carving with it has smoothed the sides of the blade somewhat. In other words, the only complaint I have is one of my own inner conflict.
All of this, and it comes with a beautiful, high quality, tanned leather sheath... you can feel and smell the quality of the leather...
Overall, this is a wonderful knife!
