Protect your face, save some weight

Written on Feb 16, 2021

This headnet will protect your face from gnats, mosquitos, black flies, and whatever other winged bloodsuckers that nature will throw at you. It's best to wear this with some sort of brimmed hat or baseball cap so that the mesh is off of your skin. Some added benefits of the bug headnet is it can be used as a clothes stuffsack in your backpack if you only need the headnet when at camp. Also, use it around the top of your sleeping pad to keep your pillow from shifting around in the middle of the night. This piece of gear is also essential for bivy-less cowboy camping.

It's a spoon

Written on Feb 16, 2021

Way more affordable than a titanium spoon and weights only 11g. Nice long handle and large spoon bowl will make munching down a 2 person mountain house at the end of your thirty mile day a breeze. The green color is bright and easy to find. Potential downsides is that plastic spoons are easy to break if you compress your pack, so be mindful of where you keep your trusty eating device.

Tried and True, new valve rocks

Written on Feb 16, 2021

The xlite has always been a favorite among thru-hikers and lightweight backpackers alike. This newest iteration brings an updated valve which makes inflation and deflating significantly faster, especially when using the included pump sack. The only downside to this pad is it's still rather loud. The material sounds like you're rolling around on a bag of chips when shifting your weight around at night. Is this a deal breaker? Hardly. The sound is not too much louder than the noise of my nemo switchback. The package for me did not include a patch kit, so make sure you bring something for an emergency repair if necessary.
