Most Helpful Positive Review Coleman Northstar Lantern
Superb customer service in every way from Campsaver. Thanks to them they made the decision to purchase easy.. I have bought from them before and will continue to do so. The Coleman lanterns were great as well. Thank you Campsaver!
Most Helpful Negative Review Tedious to light and use
The lantern is well made, but that’s the only good thing I can say about it. Working with a liquid fuel lantern is not for everyone. If you’re used to a propane lantern, it will be a real chore to pump regularly, have the enclosure become engulfed in flames until the pressure builds up enough to b...

Coleman Northstar Dual Fuel Lantern used for Ice Fishing

by DaveR, from MN, United States Written on March 9, 2022
I have been using this lantern for about 10 years. I have only used coleman fuel because I get the most lumens from white gas I change the lantern about once a year or when it looks like it might break. It lights easily but you have to pump it up about every hour to get steady light and heat. I don't use any other lights in my flip-up ice shack and it provides enough heat even on a cold windy day. When you put a new candle on it you should do it outside as it does smoke about a minute while the candle is burning in.
I have other propane heaters but this lantern always does the job. Keep an extra candle on hand just in case you break one.
Pros:
  • Quality in top shelf.
Cons:
  • Candle are expensive.
Best Used for:
  • Ice Fishing in a shack on on the ice.

Probably better than I once thought!

Apologies to anyone who read my prior review on this item. Although much of it was accurate to the best of my knowledge, there was one part that needs updating. It's quite possible that I was NOT tightening the pump handle prior to lighting the lantern, and this may have accounted for my beginner's difficulty in keeping it lit and stable. The other things were all true, e.g. about the shrill sound it makes at low light settings. I actually have a Northstar Propane lantern with the single tube mantle that does the exact same thing! Only that one lights easier :-).
Pros:
  • Well Made, economical to use
Cons:
  • Shrieks at dim settings
Best Used for:
  • Anything!
