bullers's Review of Exped Lightning 60 Backpack
Used this pack on 50mile through hike in pacific northwest this Fall - 5 stars. Toted ~30lbs with ease - shoulders felt great throughout so it really bore weight on hips as expected thru elevation gains/losses. Walked through driving rain as weather system pelted us for >4 -5 hours with soaking rain / wind - the kind you dash from the car to house to stay dry. Only found a (very) little bit of standing water at the bottom inside pack which was really admirable considering what we walked through. Pretty sure it gathered in the side pockets and migrated through - definitely did not trickle down from above as everything else was bone dry. I do have the Exped pack cover for next time if I know conditions will be similar (but man that was a LOT of rain). I've no concern walking without pack cover in lighter precip. Roll top & fabric design does its job.
Bear vault BV500 fits at bottom on its side with enough room to jam clothing on either end - and a little more around the barrel round.
Lack of pockets will bother some as others have noted. I was fine without - but yes you do need to get creative with water storage (on hip belt / shoulder strap) as sides aren't easy access. An add-on pack as capper on top (for maps, snacks, gloves etc) is helpful so you're not having to get inside the roll top. Not a huge PIA but still was inconvenient at times for the minor items.
Finally - construction seems very robust. I took a bad fall off rock - landed 100% squarely flat on my back / backpack from a height of 6-7' and the Exped took the whole impact (I'm 220lb). Just a couple tiny tears / punctures in bottom fabric from on sharp rock. No burst seams or ripped straps. Walked away from that one a little shaken but without broken gear so was very impressed with its toughness.
Am definitely bringing this pack on future UL treks
