used these on 50 mile through hike in Olympics Sep '17 and was very pleased. Boot strap / lace clip didn't pose any problems or need re-adjusting throughout day once we set out. Fabric seemed to breathe well. I agree with the other reviewer in that I wish they were 3-4" longer / higher (to reach knee joint) but that's my only negative and hence 4 stars. I didn't have any issue with them shuffling down the leg while trekking as mentioned elsewhere.
no complaints with this gear - has performed well on trail in a variety of weather conditions. Battery life seems above avg. Red light mode lets you see around the camp stove without blinding your camp mates. The phosphorescent ring feature brings this from 4 to 5 stars IMO. Makes your lamp easy to find in the middle of the night when 'nature' calls to exit the tent.
Used this pack on 50mile through hike in pacific northwest this Fall - 5 stars. Toted ~30lbs with ease - shoulders felt great throughout so it really bore weight on hips as expected thru elevation gains/losses. Walked through driving rain as weather system pelted us for >4 -5 hours with soaking rain / wind - the kind you dash from the car to house to stay dry. Only found a (very) little bit of standing water at the bottom inside pack which was really admirable considering what we walked through. Pretty sure it gathered in the side pockets and migrated through - definitely did not trickle down from above as everything else was bone dry. I do have the Exped pack cover for next time if I know conditions will be similar (but man that was a LOT of rain). I've no concern walking without pack cover in lighter precip. Roll top & fabric design does its job.
Bear vault BV500 fits at bottom on its side with enough room to jam clothing on either end - and a little more around the barrel round.
Lack of pockets will bother some as others have noted. I was fine without - but yes you do need to get creative with water storage (on hip belt / shoulder strap) as sides aren't easy access. An add-on pack as capper on top (for maps, snacks, gloves etc) is helpful so you're not having to get inside the roll top. Not a huge PIA but still was inconvenient at times for the minor items.
Finally - construction seems very robust. I took a bad fall off rock - landed 100% squarely flat on my ba
I grabbed 3 pairs just to push my order over $100 for free shipping. Didn't really need them but IMO you can't go wrong with Smartwool socks - they are my go-to for active (gym) use, on trail and in work boots so extra pairs will be used eventually. Description does not indicate but these have very substantial padding. More than the avg sock Smartwool would advertise as 'light'. Terrific comfort for high impact. Glad I got three.
First time buying Montane pants - quite pleased thus far. Sizing selection can be a little confusing compared to other brands. I'm a 36w/34l for most pants and went XL/long for my Montane purchase. Comfortable fit however if your legs are stockier than avg in the thigh (like me) you'll notice these are a little slimmer cut up top (I'm a diehard fan of Marmot Scree). Snaps at leg bottom hitting the floor and getting under heel are a bit of an issue if you're wearing these around the house in sock feet - but not when you're out of the house and in footwear. Internal zippered security pocket is handy. The two tone "saddle shoe" look renders those pants un-wearable in urban settings IMO - but the solid color pants are equally fine on the street / trail. Will buy more as deals appear.
just a comment - don't know if it's the resolution on my laptop but the straps on the black model appear to have a pinkish hue to them. In real life they're straight grey (exact same as those that show for the lichen green / sea blue models). Anyone else seeing that or just me? :) Anyway no surprises upon receipt. Shipped quickly and correctly. Got 20% off coupon which made deal even better. Only thing holding me back from scoring higher is that I haven't taken on trail yet. I traded my Gregory Z65 for this Exped 60 Lightning. Thus far I've noted a big difference with how much better the Exped is transferring weight off my shoulders to hips - so far it's a much more comfortable pack than the Z65. Looking forward to next season.
